Let’s talk about true love. There was once a poor man in India who saw his wife’s struggles with maintaining her menstrual hygiene. So one day he went into town to buy her the pads she needed. He pad the high price but couldn’t shake how unfair and unreasonable it was that his beloved had to choose either wholesome foods or sanitary care month in and month out. So he took action of his own and created a machine that would create sanitary pads at a fraction of the cost!
This is the the true story of Mr. Arunachalam Muruganantham and his wife, Shanti. After realizing his wife’s deep shame around her sanitary rags that were leaving embarrassing odors around the home of the Muruganantham family, he took it upon himself to salvage not only his wife’s dignity but her access to what she needed for her health.
In true fairy tale ending fashion, http://interactive.aljazeera.com reports “The result was an easy-to-use machine for producing low-cost sanitary pads.Imported machines cost over US$500,000. Muruga’s machine, by contrast, is priced at US$950. Now women’s groups or schools can buy his machine, produce their own sanitary pads and sell the surplus. In this way, Muruga’s machine has created jobs for women in rural India. He has started a revolution in his own country, selling 1,300 machines to 27 states, and has recently begun exporting them to developing countries all over the world.
